In an age where stress has become synonymous with work, and life’s demands overwhelm you with every passing day, it is imperative to blow off steam. And Reeti Roy, founder of Aglet Ink and former LAMP (Legislative Assistant to a Member of Parliament), seems to have found a solution to this problem: writing.

At her SoBo residence, Roy conducts memoir-writing workshops. The intent is to ensure people leave feeling relaxed. The concept is similar to writing an old-fashioned letter to a loved one, or penning your thoughts — how your day went, something significant that happened — in a journal. These are designed in such a way that participants are encouraged to borrow from their memories to write. The reminiscing acts as therapy, Roy believes.

She says that the idea came to her while she was working with the British Refugee Council between 2010 and 2011. She realised it was easier to write how you feel, rather than talk about it. “In our culture, it is still taboo to seek therapy, which is unfortunate. Here, you go back to your childhood, and think about a situation that affected you,” she explains. Roy, who has worked with refugees suffering from trauma, says it’s important to come to the workshop with an open mind.
